In this video we’re going to add upsells to our products.
To do this we’re going to use a simple but highly effective plugin called the Voyager Cross-sell and Upsell – available in the Shopify app store.
It offers a free trial for the first 7 days, then will cost you $27 each month afterwards. NOTE: If budget is a concern, I recommend you set up ads for each of your products first till you find a winning item you want to scale up. After this, you can then get this app and add an upsell to it.
What should you upsell?
Here are three things you should consider before choosing an item to upsell:
1) Make it relevant to the initial item
It’s no good upselling a dog necklace after selling a cat mug. They’re totally different!
That’s why upsells work best when items compliment each other.
For example: the upsell for these cat coffee spoons is a cat coffee mug that turns your face into a cat when you drink from it.
This is the perfect match up. Not only because they both revolve around cats, but they also have that “cute” factor.
2) Select an item that is no more than double the price of the first item
This was a rule I mentioned earlier in step 2. If your item costs $10, do not price your upsell item more than $20. Keep in mind that the cheaper the item, the easier it is to sell.
With upsells, you can get away with charging higher prices for your products because of the fact that you’ve built trust.
But let’s not push it. Turning up the dial and charging $50 isn’t going to work with any normal customer. You may have earned trust, but not that much to charge $50.
In addition, you don’t want to offend the customer by making your upsell too expensive. If you do, you don’t just miss out on losing money on the upsell, but you also risk having your customer bounce from the whole cart and buying nothing. So you get punished TWICE.
NOTE: On that point, something else I should point out is you should never actually price your product at $10. When I say $10, I mean pricing your item at $9.95 or $9.99. It’s a psychological hack that basically every retailer out there uses, and it works.
3) Make sure you’ve set your upsell item to be on sale
Select your normal price to be double your “sales price”. An example of how this should look:
“WAIT! Buy This Cat Coffee Mug For $20 $10 For A LIMITED Time Only!”
This also has the additional effect of making upsells seem as if they’re on sale for a limited amount of time, so adds scarcity to the offer and encourages them to take it.
Once you’ve taken note of these three things, you’re now ready to create your upsell.
How to create an upsell
Click the link below to open the Voyager page in the Shopify app store.
Get Voyager Upsell & Cross‑Sell
2. Click the “Add App” button.
3. On the next page, click Install app.
4. Then click Start Free Trial.
5. Click ‘New’ to create a new upsell.
6. For the Upsell name. Let’s type in Cat Spoon Upsell. Then click ‘Next’.
7. Let’s select ‘Checkout Button’ for where we want our upsell to appear. Click ‘Next’.
8. Now select ‘Appear on Product’.
9. Set the trigger item to the Cat Coffee Spoons. Click ‘Next’.
10. Now select the ‘Cat Face Coffee Mug’ as the upsell item. Click ‘Next’.
11. Click on ‘Customize Upsell View’.
Now type in the Offer Headline. As you can see, I used powerful words, drew attention to a special offer and created scarcity. For these 2 headlines, just put in a space instead as we’re not setting incentives for now. Click ‘Next’.
12. Now click ‘Create and Activate’.
13. And that’s it! You’ve successfully added an upsell to your store.
